EU Clothing Imports in 1st Quarter 2016: Categories Quarterly Report

EU's clothing imports have stagnated in most categories of products in the first quarter this year, due to the continued weakness of the euro and the pound. The European import market has eventually declined in dollar terms from its level five years earlier, as reflected by our report. Statistical tables are published with volume, value and unit value changes in euro and US$ terms, covering 61 and 62 HS chapters (knit and woven clothing). The full table is also available for download with historical data from first quarter 2011.

EU clothing imports have remained depressed in many product categories in the first quarter this year.

Compared with a year earlier, shipments have for instance declined 3.1% in volume terms in T-shirt category HS 6109, even dropping 4.7% in dollar terms.

Knit shirt categories have also retreated in HS 6105 (men/boys, -4.3%) and 6106 (women/girls, -5%).

Woven shirts for men/boys in 6205 have declined -6.2%, with imports of the same product for women/girls however rising 8.5% in 6206.

5-Year stagnation

If considering the last five years, total clothing imports have only risen 4% with knit clothing up 8% and woven clothing only gaining 1%.

Women/girls knit short imports in 6106 have even fallen 25% in volume terms from the first quarter 2011.

T-shirt imports only declined 2%.

In US$ terms, imports have retreated in most categories, as the fall of the euro and the Sterling in 2015 has forced buyers in sourcing relatively cheaper products in US$ terms in order to limit the rise in prices at retail.

Euro prices no more surging

With the euro no more sharply retreating in first quarter, unit prices have stayed relatively unchanged from a year earlier in euro terms, by contrast with their surge in January-March 2015.

In dollar terms, prices have slightly declined in 1st quarter 2016.

Over the past five years, unit values have experienced a double-digit increase in euro terms in many product categories whereas declining in all categories in dollar terms.

The euro could stay weakened in the remaining of the year, as the US Fed is expected raising its interest rates. The Sterling could possibly rebound in the second half if the Brexit is eventually rejected by UK voters at the end of June.
