US Apparel Imports in 1st Half 2016: Category Analysis Statistical Report

US apparel buyers are increasingly diversifying their sourcing, with different origins being selected depending on product categories. This is clearly reflected by our series of tables offering a detailed view of US imports per origin, for major cotton and man-made fiber categories. Full data are extracted from our database, and available for premium subscribers.

US apparel buyers have made very different decisions when they selected origins for importing apparel in first half this year.

Beyond an overall stagnation and the long-term shift from cotton to cheaper man-made fiber apparel, the origin is increasingly dependent on the specific product which is being imported.

In category 339 of women/girls cotton knit shirts for example, imports from China have plunged by 16.8% in volume terms in the first half, from the same period last year.

In corresponding MMF category 638 however, imports from China have only gained 5%, far from offsetting the Chinese decline in the cotton category.

By contrast, Vietnam has only lost 5.4% in 338 whereas surging 19% in 638.

Vietnam is not far from becoming the largest supplier in both categories to the detriment of China.

In 347 category of men/boys cotton trousers, imports from leading Bangladesh have risen 11.5% against an overall increase of only 2.3%.

Imports from Vietnam have however surged 26.3%, from a lower level. Other supplying countries have lost ground.

In the corresponding women/girls category of 348, Bangladesh has also surged, however from a low level, with the leader China again resisting and keeping 34.7% of the market in value terms.

Bangladesh has also made strong gains in the man-made fiber trouser categories, even if from low levels.

In the cotton underwear category, shipments from leading Vietnam have surprisingly lost 16.6% in volume terms whereas imports were rising 9% from El Salvador, now ranking second in value terms.

Amid CAFTA-DR countries, the Dominican Republic is also back with a rise of 11.5% in volume terms and a share of 9.2% in value terms.
