EU Import Prices in Euro and US$, Import Change and Share, Import Price Change

EU Clothing Import Price Comparison in 4th Quarter and Full 2016: China vs. Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Turkey and Vietnam Statistical Report

Average unit prices of shipments to the European Union have significantly declined in both euro and US$ terms in full 2016. Chinese unit values have more sharply dropped than average in most product categories, without boosting exports to the EU, whereas Bangladesh has continued improving its market shares. Other leading suppliers have also cut their unit values in the last year. As usual, the market trends are rather different depending on product categories and origins. Our series of comparison tables offer a comprehensive view of EU clothing imports per HS 4-digit category with volume, value and unit price changes, while market shares are also calculated for each major supplying country. Full data are available for download.

EU's clothing imports have recovered in 2012, in line with a more stable euro and whatever the fall of the Sterling. However, beyond the overall increase, sharp differences may be observed if comparing product categories from leading suppliers.

Shipments from China have for instance declined in most categories in volume terms, although woven overcoat exports to the European Union have continued rising in 6201 and 6202.

By contrast, imports from Bangladesh have experienced a double-digit growth overall, with however a few categories only benefiting from a single-digit rise and even shipments falling in two other categories of products.

The share of Bangladesh is now above China's share in a few categories as a result, like in knit shirt categories 6105 and 6106.

Bangladesh now accounts for 46% of T-shirt imports from outside the European Union, against only 11.6% for China, in volume terms.

Average unit prices of Chinese products have however more clearly fallen than shipments from rival countries.

In many categories, Chinese unit values have even experienced a double-digit fall from the previous year, like in pullover categories.

Even this shift to lower-quality products has not boosted exports to Europe.

Turkey, India, Indonesia or Tunisia continue having the higher end of the European market, whereas China, Pakistan and Bangladesh are still fighting for the lower-end.
