Nylon/Polyamide and Caprolactam Market Prices in China Monthly Report

Nylon 6 prices have begun bottoming out in the last days in China, over a need for raising inventories ahead of spring holidays. The market has been very volatile in the last year, amid a new increase of caprolactam and nylon 6 capacities in China. Our monthly report covers the latest and long-term trends of nylon 6 (polyamide 6) prices, also displaying a vertical view of the nylon chain prices, including benzene, caprolactam, staple fibers and filament yarns. The nylon/CPL spread is also calculated for assessing gross margin trends of filament producers. Daily prices of the past 12 months are available for download.

Nylon 6 prices have begun bottoming out in the last days in China.

Benchmark DTY 70D/24f has gained 250 yuan per metric ton in a single week or 1.1%.

Demand for nylon 6 fibers is supported by the usual need for replenishing inventories ahead of new year holidays in China.

Downwstream filament weavers in the textile industry will progressively reduce their production levels in the coming weeks.

Demand will rebound after holidays.

Surging CPL and Nylon 6 capacities

Nylon 6 prices have been very volatile in the past year, falling about 30% before eventually rebounding to their original level.

This is obviously due to a similar volatility of raw material costs, as caprolactam has dropped more than 40% before recovering until the end of October and later slightly sliding.

Margins of nylon 6 producers have heavily suffered in the past year before they have started recovering in the last quarter.

The volatility of caprolactam prices is due to instability of many plants in China with maintenance operations also affecting the production level.

Overcapacities

Over the ong-term, overcapacities are expected depressing CPL prices, whatever the continuous rise of nylon 6 production in the country due to strong demand from different segments, including the textile industry.

After being heavily dependent on foreign countries, China has rapidly developed its CPL capacities in the past years, surging from 1.31 million MT in 2012 up to 3.55 million in 2017.

Capacities should further rise 10% in 2018.

Imports of caprolactam have declined from 710,000 MT in 2012 down to about 220,000 MT in the past three years.

Nylon 6 capacities have risen from 1.9 million MT in 2012 up to 4 million in last year, with an average increase of 15%.
