Italian exporters are also taking advantage of the economic growth of South Korea. Our statistical report offers a comprehensive view of South Korea's apparel imports over the last 5-year period per origin and HS 4-digit product category. All data are available for download.

South Korea's apparel imports have recovered in 2017, after stagnating for two years.

Total shipments to the Korean market have risen 7.55% in dollar terms.

After experiencing a double-digit increase in 2013 and 2014, apparel imports had only gained 0.32% and 1.38% in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Over the last 10-year period, the Korean import market has surged 115% in dollar terms, reflecting a rise of 147% of knit apparel imports under HS chapter 61 whereas woven apparel imports have only gained 101% under HS chapter 62.

Most products are coming from China and Vietnam together accounting for 69.87% of total clothing imports.

If China still ranks first amid suppliers, it will soon be replaced by a surging Vietnam.

Vietnamese shipments have gained 9% in 2016 before rising more than 17% in 2017, in dollar terms.

Korean tariffs have been removed on textile and apparel imports from Vietnam in 2016, with full effect being felt in the last year.

As a result, Vietnamese apparel have accounted for 37.2% of total imports in 2017 against 37.2% for Chinese products.

No doubt that Vietnam will become the largest supplier of Korean importers in the current year or in 2019, partly due to the relocation of China's apparel plants to Vietnam.

The Korean apparel industry has also relocated its production to different Asian countries a long time ago, including to Bangladesh or Indonesia.

Clothing imports from Indonesia have risen 11.5% in 2017 accounting for 6.2% of total shipments.

Imports from Bangladesh only rose 8.2 in 2017, accounting for a negligible 2.4% of the market whatever trade preferences offered by Korea under the duty-free quota-free regime for Least Developed countries (LDCs).

At the higher end of the market, Italy also is a significant supplier whereas Myanmar is now stagnating at the lower end.
