Cotton fiber and yarn prices continue resisting any decline, our correspondent reports. 23 March 2017 - Apparel exports from Bangladesh are now declining, due to the fall of the Sterling and to the recession of the US import market. Shipments have already been depressed in 2016 to the US whereas further soaring to the EU thanks too their duty-free status. Bangladesh is however missing the historical shift from cotton to polyester, meaning its industry could eventually suffer from surging competition with Vietnam. 23 March 2017 - Viscose fiber prices are now falling in China, in line with a sharp decline of polyester prices and a slight drop of cotton prices. Profit margins should however stay at a high level at viscose plants or even improving. Our weekly report covers the viscose/rayon staple fiber and filament markets over the last 12 months. 22 March 2017 - Polyester prices are less obviously dropping in China, due to a stabilization of raw material costs in the last week. Production levels and inventories are however remaining very large.
