US Apparel Imports in 1st Quarter 2016: China vs. Rest of World Statistical Report

China's share of the US apparel market has declined in the first quarter, with a weakening leadership in cotton apparel categories but also in man-made fiber categories where China has until now resisted any decrease. This significant move is reflected by our statistical review covering the last five years and comparing US apparel imports from China with shipments from Rest of the World (RoW) for every category of products, in volume, value and unit value terms. Historical data are available for Q1 2011-2016.

This time, China has begun clearly retreating on the US apparel market.

Over the first quarter this year, apparel imports from China have dropped 1.6% in volume terms from a year earlier, after still surging 10% in the same quarter of 2015.

Losing market shares...

Imports from other nations have risen 1.9% in the first quarter 2016 by contrast, having only climbed 3.8% in the same period of 2015.

China's share of the US import market has therefore slightly declined in volume terms from 37.97% to 37.16%.

The decrease can be observed in cotton apparel categories but also in man-made fiber categories, more surprisingly.

Until now, China had resisted any decline on the US market thanks to a shift in demand from cotton to MMF categories.

Vietnam is increasingly replacing China in these categories of products chiefly made of man-made fibers. MMF categories also

China's share of MMF categories has for instance dropped in 638/639 (knit shirts) and in 647/648 (trousers).

China's share has however risen in 641 (MMF woven shirts for women and girls).

Other origins from the Rest of the World (RoW) have also made gains in cotton apparel categories, including knit shirts and trousers.

China has not retreated in 341 (cotton woven shirts for women and girls).
