EU Clothing Imports in 4th Quarter and Full 2016: Markets Quarterly Report

European clothing import markets have stopped falling in volume terms in full 2016, with shipments to Germany and France stagnating whereas Spanish imports were further soaring. Average unit prices have dropped in dollar terms, especially for shipments to the U.K. where imports are being depressed by the lower value of the Sterling. Our 5-year data from fourth quarter 2011 reflect long-term trends of European Union clothing markets, offering a comprehensive review of the European Union imports per destination. Our statistical report provides volume, value and unit value changes released in both euro and US$ terms. The full table is available for download.

Spanish imports of apparel from outside the European Union have further soared in 2016, rising 11.4% in volume terms and 8% in dollar terms.

These data reflect the continuous development of Spanish clothing chains in Europe.

Spanish imports have surged 38% in five years in volume terms whereas total EU imports were only rising 5% in the meantime.

In dollar terms, Spanish imports have gained 20% from 2011-2016 with total imports being down 8% over the same 5-year period.

Shipments to the U.K. have also sharply increased in the last year, if considering volume terms, being up 40% in only five years (+7.5% in 2016).

In dollar terms however, imports to U.K.'s market have declined 5.2% in 2016, plunging by 31% in only five years.

Average unit price of U.K.'s clothing imports from outside the EU has actually lost 36% in the last five years, against "only" 14% for total 28 EU members.

Other import markets have remained relatively depressed in 2016, like Germany (-0.22% in volume terms) or France (-0.56%), although a stable euro should have helped boosting demand from both countries.

The decline of the euro in 2016 has not yet been fully digested and a rebound of the European currency could help revamping demand, by contrast.

Such a recovery in the euro's value is not expected taking place this year, however, whereas the Sterling could also stay at a very low level after having dramatically dropped following Brexit vote, therefore depressing demand from UK buyers on the international clothing market.
