Pakistan Apparel Exports in 1st Quarter 2017 Country Report

Apparel exports from Pakistan have steadily increased in the past months, being boosted by the duty-free access to the European market and whatever the fall experienced in shipments to the United States. Our statistical series provide a comprehensive view of Pakistan's clothing exports by month over the last 10 years, with long-term trends being analyzed for knit and woven categories, respectively. The report also includes an exhaustive review of US and EU imports from Pakistan per product category.

Apparel exports from Pakistan have steadily risen in the past months, as a duty-free access to the European Union is boosting demand and more than offsetting a fall on the US market.

Clothing exports have rebounded in May, rising 12% in dollar terms from a year earlier.

Shipments had however declined 1% in April, by contrast.

Long term trends indicate a rise of about 3% which is far from the strong recovery announced when the European Union has offered a GSP-Plus trade regime to Islamabad.

The duty-free access has however boosted exports to the European Union which have risen 6.6% in volume terms in the first quarter from a year earlier whereas total EU clothing imports were falling 1.8% in the meantime.

Cambodia and Myanmar excepted, Pakistan has benefited from the strongest demand from EU buyers in the last years, surging 73% in five years, in volume terms.

Its share of the import market has risen to only 4.8% however, below China, Bangladesh, Turkey and India.

On the US market, Pakistan suffers from a rise of its costs whereas suppliers are excessively focused on cotton apparel production.

Pakistan obviously lacks a strong polyester industry by contrast with India, meaning that exports could further stagnate in the future.

Exporters have also been unable to develop strong sales to other Asian countries, with EU and US still accounting for the largest share of shipments.
