CAFTA Countries Back on US Apparel Market (Country Report)

18 November 2010 - US apparel imports from Central America are this year strongly rebounding, after experiencing a continuous decline in the past four years. Rising costs in China are resulting in a shift to Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala and even the Dominican Republic. US Apparel Imports Sharply Falling from Central America (Statistical Report)

24 July 2009 - US apparel imports strongly declined from the Central American countries and the Dominican Republic over the first quarter this year. Proximity and duty-free access no more confer an advantage to regional exporters of knit apparel after woven apparel sales had already dropped in the past three years, as indicated by our statistical tables. US Apparel Import Prices: China vs. CAFTA in 2005-2008

3 April 2009 - U.S. apparel imports from Central America suffered from rising competition from China in the past four years. A series of niche markets were however preserved, thanks to the protection offered by the U.S. limits on Chinese shipments. With these quotas now lifted and the economic recession depressing the market, shipments from CAFTA countries are shrinking across the board. New CAFTA Rules of Origin to be Implemented by Mid-August

30 July 2008 - The United States is expected implementing on August 15th new rules of origin under the free trade agreement with Central America and the Dominican Republic. The so-called pocketing amendment will allow a larger use of Asian fabrics while cumulation of origin should boost sales of Mexican materials. A "2 for 1" bill was also introduced in the U.S. House for allowing duty-free apparel imports from the Dominican Republic made with Asian fabrics in exchange for purchasing US cotton fabrics. US Apparel Imports from CAFTA-DR Countries in 3rd Quarter 2007  (SAMPLE)

15 January 2008 - US apparel imports from CAFTA-DR countries fell in the third quarter of last year, reflecting rising uncertainties ahead of US quotas' removal. Poor results in cotton knit shirt categories 337 and 338 may indicate some serious threat for Central American countries while US trouser imports from the Dominican Republic dramatically fell in the last two years.
